I want to take automotive engineering at uni which I know is a hard course, I definitely want to go to uni but I am very keen on a gap year.

Just want some opinions on things to do, if its a good idea, your experiences, etc

One thing I'm worried about is forgetting things I've learned and my work ethic after I've been off for a year.

However I'm very keen on doing some interrailing, earning some money, learning a few new things and getting some experience with an engineering firm (if anyone knows the best way to go about this let me know).

If you want to take a gap year, take one. It gets harder the older you get and you should be fine starting up again. Work ethic might drop if you are regretting not taking a year out!

In my experience, taking time off just reminds you why you want to be doing you course in the first place.

    Look into YINI.

I wouldn't worry about forgetting things. When you come across them again you will remember them quickly.
