I am really interested in studying and pursuing a future career in social work and focus around foster care/substance abuse but, everyone that I have told informed me that I would have difficulty. They all said that it was a lot to get into and hard to see the things that a lot of people are going through, also stating it was a fairly thankless job (which I don't mind).

    Any thoughts?

To be honest you have pretty much described being a social worker, it's a thankless job at times and very hard work. If you're not the sort of person who is resilient enough to cope with seeing and hearing the most awful parts of our society then I don't recommend that you pursue this path. However, despite the hard work it's a very rewarding job with lots of opportunities to progress and develop your career
