So in 2011 I was diagnosed with schizophrenia but that isn't the thing that gives me most trouble. I seem to be reasonably stable at the moment and haven't had any bad patches in nearly a year so things all seem to be OK on that front.

I do on the other hand suffer from severe agoraphobia. I find it next to impossible to leave the house and haven't done so for longer than I care to remember. I feel kind of trapped but I have become used to my restricted life style. To the point where I don't really think about how lonely I am any more. I can't for the life of me imagine going out where there are lots of people about. It terrifies me to be honest.

Does anyone else suffer from severe agoraphobia? How do you cope with it? I found that I spend most of my time talking to people on the internet and that is how I get my socialising done by making friends with people on websites and in multiplayer games since I can't actually go out and meet people in real life.

So yeah how do you cope with this?

Hello! Unfortunately I have experience with this, although I don't want to say too much publicly. You can PM me if you want to know more. Are you getting any support? There is help available; if you haven't already I suggest you contact your local community mental health team. If you can't go to your GP to get a referral then you should be able to do a self-referral to get access to their services.

I had more severe agoraphobia for a few months to a year also not sure of exact time frame but cbt has helped me have you tried cbt at all?

I mean I'm not fine now I still don't want to really go out would rather just hide and never be seen but I have actually made progress about the house and I'm going out more so yep. But I totally feel your pain it's pretty difficult. Do you live alone or with parents or anything?

I'd be grateful if you could PM some of what helped you. If you don't want to though I understand. Things like this are quite personal.

Yeah I've done CBT in the past. It certainly helped with certain things and I am grateful that I have done it but it tended to concentrate on the issues I was having with schizophrenia and the agoraphobia is more of a symptom of that rather than its own thing. I used to have a really nice CPN that I got on with really well. What I need is someone I trust to come out and about with me to help me get my confidence but that is unlikely to happen due to funding and everything which is understandable.

I live with my parents who are great but they already do enough for me as it is and I kinda feel like I need to beat this on my own. I need to move out fairly soon for various reasons and I need to be able to cope with basic living such as buying food on my own. At the moment that feels impossible.

Ah right you can always have cbt again there's no limit to it you just have to wait for it each time and specify what it is you want to focus on. Just get them to refer you or make a self referral. Worth a go.

You should get the cbt and employ what they teach you about dealing with the agoraphobia and make your parents aware of ways they can help. As much as you say they help you already which is great the added things they'd have to do to help you get out a bit more wouldn't be much other than just being company every now and then. Although I understand your problems don't stop at agoraphobia so it might not be as smooth sailing as just nipping out for a short while.

    Are you on any medication?
And/or do you still see the CMHT people?

    Hey

I don't know if what I have is agorophobia but like you, I am terrified of leaving my flat. I have a very small area that I can get to that I call the "magic triangle" lol. Basically it is a triangle made up of my flat, the centre across the road where my support worker is based and the tesco express on the next road. I don't really know anything that will help (sorry!!!) but I just wanted to say you aren't alone. When I read your post about needing someone to help you get out and about it really resonated with me because that's how I feel but I know I will never get funding. I'm never "ill enough" or some rubbish. If you find any solutions or ever want to talk feel free to message me
