1) what is incomplete combustion?

2) i know the products of incomplete combustion on hydrocarbons
- carbon monoxide
-carbon dioxide
-water
-unburnt hydrocarbon ( solid particulates)

But how do they harm the environment?
Thank you xx

Well, I'm sure you know what carbon dioxide does to the environment.. Global warming etc. Water vapour is actually a greenhouse gas too and has much more of a negative effect than CO2 does, it's just that there isn't as much of it. Carbon monoxide bonds, irreversibly, with haemoglobin in the blood, forming carboxyhemoglobin, which is bad for health. I'm not sure about the particulates other than if they are inhaled it could lead to lung problems in the long term e.g. Emphysema. Hope this helps a little

Carbon dioxide is not produced by incomplete combustion!! It is only produced by complete combustion.

Incomplete combustion is when a fuel doesn't burn in a plentiful supply of oxygen. To explain the carbon dioxide thing - carbon dioxide has 2 oxygens, just remember that there is not enough oxygen for the 2 oxygen atoms required and so carbon monoxide is produced instead during incomplete combustion (only one oxygen atom).

The solid carbon particulates causing global dimming (decrease in the earths temperature) since they travel into the earths atmosphere and reflect the suns rays away from the earth! They are mostly produced by the incomplete combustion of diesel.

Hope this was useful!
