I always thought Ali G was a stereotype of British Muslims (probably Pakistanis), hence the name "Ali". Ali G fits the stereotypical image of British Pakistanis very easily too.

No. I feel it was a subtle social commentary on nonblacks foolishly imitating the thuggish stereotype.

    This.

There are definitely muslims/pakistanis who act in ways similar to him, especially those who live in cities, but he wasnt a stereotype of muslims/pakistanis specifcally.

It was based on the callers who used to ring in to Tim Westwood's radio show.

Though I do agree the local Muhammads and Mustafas do a very good impression of Ali G.

I think most people thought it was a Muslim at the time though. Maybe he hides it so he isn't accused of racism?

Granted I live in a white middle class part of Greater London, but nearly every Pakistani I've seen has someway or another fallen along the chavvy stereotype. I think most people stereotype them as chavvy.

I'm not the only one. I think the majority of people did! He dodn't reveal his name until years later.

I don't mean that, I mean I don't know Ali G's name other than Ali G but to me Ali is Alistair, same as Ollie is Oliver or Josh is Joshua.

I don't that's true. Even on google you've got people reacting to the reveal with "oh he wasn't a muslim!".

So you don't think it's true that I thought Ali stood for Alistair? I have known Alistairs in life who have referred to themselves as Ali.

I don't know any Alistars for some reason. I do know of people called Ali however, but they are all Muslim. I have a feeling he may have retracted the racism after realizing how much racism Muslims were getting.
