Recently starting a job as an intern - I won't say where - in a fairly boisterous office, I have run into trouble fitting in. Not so much an outcast, just concerned I don't get the whole dynamic which I am now confusedly part of.

Maybe someone else has faced this, but basically I have come to be nicknamed... a nice thing in many cases you would hope in a work environment. I have been named for some reason 'Turd'... I can't figure out why, sometimes I literally wait to go to the toilet outside on my break in case it has anything to do with it!

I am not sure whether to give it back... but I can't think of any good ones... and this seems totally random. Can you just throw a nickname at someone? I tried inspiring a new nickname at staff drinks, by limboing... something outlandish enough to get a reaction. Apparently not. I even changed my signature on emails to Tommy Limbo... anything but Tommy Turd.

Anyway, I have a HR meeting on Monday and want some tactics. Anyone?

I'd tell HR that you are struggling with the culture, that you find it boisterous, that you aren't finding it easy to fit in etc. They are usually pretty receptive to hearing first impressions like that, and a decent HR team will take what you say on board.

Sadly there's not much you can do about the nickname thing - it's probably best not to try and force a change, nor to try and nickname others. But I'd mention to HR just briefly that it makes you uncomfortable, they should be able to stop it, if they are a decent team. If not, then you've learnt something about that company's workplace culture!
