    MHoC By-election - March 2016

Hello and welcome to the TSR Model House of Commons By-Election! For the next 7 days, we will be giving YOU the chance to elect two MPs to TSR's very own model Parliament!

    :bl:

Four candidates are in the running to win two vacated MP seats. The polls will be open until the evening of Monday 21st March (vote before 8pm that day to ensure your vote counts!).

Only those of you who have been here over 3 months and have more than 100 posts can vote. If you have problems voting and are an eligible voter then please contact both The Speaker and the Deputy Speaker.

Click here for information about what we do or how to take part. We're always looking for more people to get involved, and this election is a great opportunity for you to do that! You could even become an MP like one of the people you voted for today!

Each Candidate's manifesto can be read below. Please make sure you read them all and vote for the candidate you'd most like to see elected.

The Financier (endorsed by the TSR Conservative and Unionist Party)My fellow TSRians,

I'm The Financier, an experienced member of the MHoC and a Support Team member responsible for this sub forum. I've participated as an MP for over three years and today, I'm asking for the chance to do so again.

In my time here I have:
    • Co-written legislation that was awarded Best Legislation of the Parliament for the last two years (and came runner-up in my first)
    • Served as Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer and Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills
    • Previously acted as a Deputy Leader for the Conservative Party

I've been involved in politics since I was 16 as a member of Conservative Future and I consider myself as having fiscally conservative and socially liberal views. I passionately believe in fighting for individual autonomy,
Where we are free to keep more of what we worked for whilst ensuring what we do contribute to the government is spent efficiently and for the benefit of all.

Where we are free to communicate without the state jeopardising our liberties and right to privacy under the guise of anti-terrorism.

Where we are free to pursue the same opportunities as those around us without barriers, preferences or prejudices against our gender or ethnicity.

As an MP I pledge to:
    • Maintain my history of excellent turnout – This by-election was brought about by the incompetence of the Green and Liberal parties in failing to maintain votes. I will be dedicated to ensuring the voice of the people on legislation is heard.
    • Fight to hold the government accountable – This government failed to meet this country’s obligations in maintaining 0.5% of GNI to funding foreign aid. The Conservatives brought this serious action to light and I intend to help continue in bringing oversight and holding the government to account.
    • Work pragmatically to serve the people – Last year, we worked with TSR Labour to address market failures in the supply of finance to small businesses. I am not interested in party warfare or ideological stubbornness and will happily engage in bipartisanship.

I’d like to think I get along with everyone here and will happily engage with anyone in the bar, even with the champagne socialists left. I'm not a newcomer but I have the dedication and experience to ensure your vote is given to someone who will be up to the job from day one. Thanks for reading and I hope you consider voting for me.

Hydeman (endorsed by the TSR National Liberal Party)

    TSR National Liberal Party

As the candidate of the newest and, arguably, most promising party in the MHoC, I hope to be able to defend and uphold liberal principles in the House, so often surrendered as they are in favour of partisanship and the personal interests of individual MPs.

Being a National Liberal, I do not restrict myself to what is feasible within the limits of bogus political spectra. In the House, I will introduce pragmatic policies in the areas of education and health, including a £3 000 cap on annual tuition fees, the reinstatement of student grants for students from poorer backgrounds, a tax on sugary food and drink to address the obesity crisis, and a long-neglected increase in funding for mental health services in the NHS, among others.

I also intend to focus, as a matter of social responsibility, on supporting environmentally progressive legislation, investing more in renewable energy than has been the case in the past, conserving the green belt for future generations, and ensuring that harsher sanctions are put in place for those who violate animal welfare laws.

If elected, I will support the continuation and maintenance of the monarchy and our uncodified constitution, as well as pushing for a reformed House of Lords that is more democratic and accountable to the electorate. Above all, I will represent the electorate by actively debating proposed legislation, taking part in all votes in the Division Lobby, and generally working with dedication to further the interests of those whom I represent in a way that has been lacking among MPs from older, more established parties in the House.

JoeL1994 (Independent)I won't try and pretend to be something I am not, my plan for the future is simplistic but concentrated on the welfare of the nation as a whole. I pledge to support:

-A slow but steady increase in the Armed Forces with a specific focus on the aims currently exhibited by the Royal Navy alongside the defence of the nation
-A reformation of the immigration system, allowing refugees protected status through application of the official process while controlling numbers of other migrants
-The building of 10 independent living centres across the nation to allow people to achieve the roles they find most fulfilling in their own homes

I will also support and push:

-A guaranteed Trident renewal till 2030 unless a viable, cheaper option becomes available
-Supporting AHP students by keeping the NHS Bursary
-A supported social housing scheme for those who need it most
-A eurosceptic outlook towards the EU, campaigning for reformation and greater control over aspects that affect our country and citizens.

In terms of activity, my voting record speaks for itself. I am one of the few MPs to maintain a perfect voting record this term. I’ve also held senior positions in two different parties and several different Government positions. I am an experienced and active member of the house that will completely push for everything I have pledged. All I need is your vote to bring change to the nation.

    JoeL1994

Some very good candidates here! I'd genuinely be pleased to see any of the candidates to win the seats.

RayApparently Mr. Speaker, I'd like to file a protest against what is trying to sell itself as Gladiator12345's manifesto. The Guidance Document clearly states that the only subjects eligible to stand in by-elections are individual members, optionally running under party banners, not whole parties, which is what this manifesto presents.

I have a reason to believe that it violates the regulations concerning by-elections and therefore must be removed and the candidate disqualified.

In any case, it shows a clear lack of dedication on their side… Gladiator12345 is completely unknown to us, hasn't stated anything about himself or made a single post in the MHoC forum, and it's clearly other people who run his campaign, using their recycled manifesto from the last election, apparently without a single change.
I'm not so much fussed about the first bit but I completely agree with the bit in bold.

    Here's some interesting exchange:

For ****'s sake, he's just another voting robot who had to be pushed and promised to even join the party! What's the point of this?!

I made a little jibe about the familiarity of this manifesto. Though I'd prefer to see original manifestos in by-elections I have seen several examples of candidates in past by-elections putting forward what would appear to be impersonal party-based manifestos.

    That's banter.
You may find that exchange to be grounds not to vote for the candidate, but I can hardly disqualify them for it.

We had a new member of the party who was very eager to be an MP. I am more than happy to give my safe seat so that newcomers can participate as an MP from day one (I did something similar over Christmas), and am consequently happy to take the risk of the by-election.

Out of interest, why haven't Labour submitted a candidate?

The Financier I would like to complain about your signature. Although it isn't specifically against the GD I would argue that having a sig telling people to vote for you is against the spirit of the no campaigning for votes via PM rule

Can you point to any provision limiting the text content of a manifesto in any election aside from the use of quotes? I'd submit that a manifesto can be anything, including complete gobbledegook if the candidate wishes. Gladiator12345 is the individual standing, and will be the person filling the seat. Therefore, the requirements of the GD are fulfilled.

In any case, it shows a clear lack of dedication on their side… Gladiator12345 is completely unknown to us, hasn't stated anything about himself or made a single post in the MHoC forum, and it's clearly other people who run his campaign, using their recycled manifesto from the last election, apparently without a single change.
We like to give new members the opportunity to get involved. He joined too soon before the by-election for it to be reasonable to ask him to write a manifesto.
