thanks soo much for posting!...so if u could choose again, would u go for a hall? or winkworth?...and yeah the en-suite-ness is veryyy tempting lol!
If I had to choose again I would definitely choose Winkworth even though I hated that stupid hill with a passion! Walking 30-45 in the morning would not be fun if you intend on living in halls instead of Winkworth!
The rooms were big enough for me and I have a lot of electronics and what not! The en-suite is great as you don't need to share toilets and showers with 'strangers' in your first year. The location was excellent for pub, clubs and bars.
Ooo but one thing to watch out for is that TV reception is POOR. I was not able to pick up TV in my room but in the kitchen we had a TV connected to a booster and a freeview box and that got us all the channels we needed (ie. Friends on E4!). I'm not sure if the reception has improved now or not... But to be honest nowadays you can download most TV shows that you miss or you can watch them through programs like 4 On Demand or the BBC's media player thing.
student houses are fine, no hall bar admittedly but most of them are in the centre next to uni so there's millions of other places to go to - Winkworth has pubs either side of it. You're gonna make friends anywhere so you should be picking a hall on location and facilities. There was no way I was walking 45 minutes to uni every day and I didn't think there was much of a chance of getting into Goldney (plus its mostly not en suite) so Winkworth was a great choice. There are a couple of student houses with only 8 or so people in which you may want to try and avoid but those houses were really sociable last year having loads of really good parties Geoff's also exaggerating, if you're an engineer like me and him it only takes 5 minutes to get to uni if you power walk up park street and then you get to rub all the stoke bishop kids noses in the fact that you got up 20 mins ago and they've been up since half 7. But yeah if you're worried about making friends, don't; Hawthorns and Winkworth will be absolutely fine (although I did have a bit of a weirdo in the room opposite me :P ) I can't vouch for orbital this year but it was good last year.
PS one thing about the Hawthorns, on a few uni websites it's advertised as being en-suite but actually not many of the rooms are so if you want that be careful.
No way! I had a Psycho right opposite me too! What a coincidence lol!
And by the way, no way are you able to power walk up to Uni in 5 minutes unless you RUN and arrive at lectures dripping with sweat. I reckon at a fairly fast pace, it took me 10 minutes minimum to get into Uni without arriving to my lectures dripping my body weight in water...
Anyone got aything to say about Hillside/Woodside? Considering putting it as my second choice.
Hillside/Woodside are actually very good places to live despite being an actual house and living with about 5 other people.
It's actually situated very close to the sports centre, which means that it's near almost all the University buildings. For example it would have taken me less than 5 minutes to walk there from Hillside/Woodside to the Engineering department if I lived there last year. This means you can literally get out of bed to lectures.
Another good reason to stay there as Wowbagger said already is that there are loads of house parties during the year which were great.
Not as far as I know, www.bris.ac.uk/resnet should have more info about specific houses though. AFAIK if somewhere has a resnet connection, its roughly as good as anywhere else that has one.

Says it's 20 minutes in the prospectus thingy. Sure you're looking at the ne across the bridge? But I can see one hell of a house party happening in it.
I have a feeling he's talking about Woodland Court....
As for Hillside/Woodside I know somebody over there this year and she seems to really enjoy it. They all seem to get on well and I'm always getting invited over for house parties etc so they do seem to have a fair few.

Yeah sorry it's been like a year since I was studying in Bristol - I can't remember the names properly. All I know is that the student houses on St Michael's Hill, the road parallel to Tyndall Avenue (the sports centre road I think) is what I was referring to in my post.
If those aren't Hillside/Woodside then I've got no idea... Sorry!

At least you tried. Thanks anyway. I think those houses have St Michaels Hill in the name.
G, Hillside woodside is that massive house over the bridge where anit and and a couple others were last year - Gina came back from the party in a trolley remember? It's a pretty cool place, fair way out but closer than stoke bishop and you go through clifton which is much nicer (and you're closer to the epi) You're also really close to ashton court which is good. When we were in first year it was boys only but they had some really good parties - orbital are good when you want to organise one as they'll email everyone on your behalf.
PS, andy - me and geoff did actually live opposite last year hence the comments
PPS @ the hawthorns person, back when I read the prospectus for the Hawthorns a few years ago it implied it was virtually all en suite, 50/50 is probably right although as far as I know it's still a random allocation so it's up to you if you wanna take the chance

do you know if all the shared rooms are en suite though?

It is decided then! I shall put hillside/woodside as my 2nd choice, Im not too bothered about it being a ways away if its only a half hr walk? would be that be right? I'm sure I wouldnt mind walking through Clifton anyway. Can't afford to live there so its the next best thing.
