G, Hillside woodside is that massive house over the bridge where anit and and a couple others were last year - Gina came back from the party in a trolley remember? It's a pretty cool place, fair way out but closer than stoke bishop and you go through clifton which is much nicer (and you're closer to the epi) You're also really close to ashton court which is good. When we were in first year it was boys only but they had some really good parties - orbital are good when you want to organise one as they'll email everyone on your behalf.

Oh yeah now I remember! I personally wouldn't like to live there because it is just as much as a trek from Hillside/Woodside as it is from Stoke Bishop! 30 minutes walk at least... Not for me sorry.

Yeah he's alright - very clever chap but sometimes gets a bit irritating - he's a bit too much when he's had a drink.

oh well. There was me thinking hillside/woodside might be a small bit closer to the general uni precinct than Stoke Bishop. It still looks good value for money to me though.
Is the distance that much of an issue? I mean, I'm looking at the cheaper end of accommodation to be living in, and the only reason I'm not considering Stoke Bishop is, they don't seem to have any, apart from university Hall, which I've heard is a bit crappy all round.
I really don't see the problem with a half hour walk to get to a place of study every weekday. Is this because I'm an outsider who has never been to Bristol before? There just generally seems to be a lot of rivalry between halls, particularly with the whole Clifton vs Stoke Bishop thing. I mean seriously, have none of you ever had to go to school/college or whatever, with a journey taking you 30mins or more, before you even came to university?

Well it was a 15 minute walk for me to get to school back in London, so I've only ever needed to walk 30 minutes to get into Uni when I was living in a house we rented for our second year (I was only there to a couple of weeks to do my retakes which I failed...)

Hillside/Woodside might be a tiny bit closer to Uni than Stoke Bishop halls but the way to Hillside/Woodside is quite hilly if I remember correctly as its situated across the river ie. you actually have to cross Clifton Suspension Bridge to get there!

If you can get over the distance problem, I'm sure it's a great place to live.

Don't worry, Geoff only thinks it's that far as he was drunk last time we were there :P It's certainly less than stoke bishop and if they reckon they can do the walk in 30 mins then i'm sure you can walk from hillside woodside quicker than that. It's also a really nice big house virtually in the middle of the countryside due to the way Bristol is after the suspension bridge. It's a nice place and would be a good second choice I reckon but due to my lazyness and being an engineer so lots of lectures, there was no way I wanted to walk over 25 mins to uni every day.

hi you've all managed to convince me that student houses are not as bad as ppl make out! so thanks!

so would you say i should put winkworth as 2nd choice rather than manor?...

do u think manor would be harder to get into as a 2nd choice?...in our prospectus, it says that both winkworth and manor have roughly the same number of 1st choice applicants as there are places, but are likely to offer some places to 2nd choice applicants...but i have a feeling that tons of ppl are applying to manor as 1st choice...

There isn't any public transport at all (it's what it says in the prospectus), it may be useless in SB but at least theres the option.
How far are the typical clubbing/pubbing/going out areas from SB? I'm guessing they'd be pretty far away from Hillside/Woodside.

At least it means people like where they are. Which can only be a good sign.

Well in my opinion, I would put down Winkworth as one of your choices. It's very close to Uni, very close to all the clubs, pubs and bars and all the rooms are en suite...

I'm not sure about the public transport thing, but in terms of distance to the social scenes such as the students union, clubs etc, I would say Hillside/Woodside would probably be closer as it's in Clifton itself.
I would say for your first year you should go in halls, the atmosphere is very good and you can meet so many people.

lol such a mixed opinion!

argh i hate decisions!

Student houses aren't as bad as people seem to think, in fact they may be the best option for some. However I would still recommend halls to most people and wouldn't have swapped hall life for a student house.

I definitely wasn't drunk that night! I distinctly remember walking like for 15 minutes with Mat, Rob H, Harry and Dan W and deciding that we should catch a cab because it was an absolute trek at that time of night! I also remember playing Derek at Knuckles and making him bleed! oops! Were you even there that night? I don't remember you being there...

That's just asking for trouble...

In other news, I think I've worked out why Hillside/Woodside is so cheap. I was looking at the prostpectus again and it clicked.
"Housing 29 students .... 2 kitchens"
Theres two senior residents too so thats just over 15 people per kichen.

they had two house parties over the year, went to the first one but couldn't make the second (with Gina's infamous trip home)

lol - kvithani - i'm also in a pickle about choosing between halls or students houses...
clever bristol people: is there a reliable (lol!) bus service between stoke bishop and the university precinct (prefereably near the chemistry dept) for all the lazy people (i.e moi :P) who dont want to walk/bike?
any response would be much appreciated! x

There was one last year. Then it got withdrawn because it was too expensive. There's been a bit of a fuss about it this year, but it doesn't look likely to come back for next year.
