I've read statistics about the impact of anti-depressants on people under 25 and it seems like they're more likely to make things worse than to make them better.... is there any actual point in taking medication? The side-effects also seem pretty awful

Well you need to preferably understand the medicine you are taking or going to be taking, and come to that conclusion with your GP.
Side effects can be quite significant, but there are alternatives which may not have those side effects so may end up switching them, as many do to get the best effects and least side-effects possible.
Always better to at least as well as taking medicine, to look at any underlying psychological causes and coping strategies.

Not everyone will get side effects. Some side effects are manageable and some so not much so.
