Diagrams, yes. Writing, no. This should be made clear on the front of the paper. It is still advised to draw a line through mistakes rather than erase them.

well most of d1 is drawing diagrams....anyone else have any ideas?

Basically I'd do any actual drawing like lines etc in pencil but put all letters, numbers and words in pen, for example like in core maths say you were drawing a graph you'd do it all in pencil but just the numbers on the axis etc in pen

I was a little concerned about using pencil due to the fact they scan it (i usually do ALL maths in pencil, gonna have to kick that habit for the exam ).

Anyways...I found this:

These papers are marked online and, if a pencil is used in drawing sketches of graphs, a sufficiently soft pencil (HB) should be used and it should be noted that coloured inks do not come up well and may be invisible.

Pg. 11, Para. 1

It is recommended that candidates use alternative notation, e.g. wavy, dotted, dashed lines to replace colour. Candidates are recommended to complete tables and diagrams in dark pencil.

Maths papers are scanned into a computer then sent off....So i would use pencil for Diagrams and Pen for letters etc.

heehee..so glad Im not doing D2 this time...coloured gel pens are so much easier to use than dotted lines... *has nightmares about that*

I heard that if they can't read the paper, or if you write outside the borders, the marker can ask to see the original paper, but don't quote me on that!

God luck in D1 tommorrow, I will be sitting it too, and I always write in pencil seeing as I make loads of mistakes and always have to cross out

They can ask for it back, or at least they could last year - the examiners can see the pencil but cant make it out so they could ask for it back. [Thats what my stats teacher said and he was a marker]
