So it was results day in Bangor and all eyes were on the Student Union. After I voted, I looked around the SU website.

I found this, the requirements for certain Student Council Representatives.

  • 1 x Gender Equality Council Representitive, who does not self-define exclusively as a man, or as male.
  • 1 x Disabled Students’ Council Representitive, who self-defines as disabled;
  • 1 x Research Post-Graduate Council Representitive, who will be a registered research post-graduate student;
  • 1 x Taught Post-Graduate Council Representitive, who will be a registered taught post-graduate student;
  • 2 x International Student Council Representitive, one who will be a non-UK registered student and one who will be a non-EU registered student;
  • 1 x Sexuality Equality Council Representitive, who does not self-define as heterosexual;
  • 1 x Race Equality Council Representitive, who does not self-define as white;
  • 1 x Mature Students’ Council Representitive, who will be a student over the age of 21 at the start of their course;
  • 1 x Part-time Students’ Council Representitive, who will be a student studying part-time, or via distance learning;
  • 1 x Vocational Students’ Council Representitive, who will be a student studying on a vocational course;
  • 1 x Welsh education Council Representitive, who is registered on a course taught through the medium of Welsh and is a fluent Welsh speaker;
  • 1 x Transgender Council Representative, who does not self-define as the gender that they were assigned at birth or does not feel that this is a complete definition of their gender.
  • 1 x Mental Well-being Council Representative, who will be a student that wishes to campaigns on issues related to mental well-being.

Now. Clearly I have problems with this or I wouldn't be posting here.

Draw your attention to the first one. Now when I saw this I flipped out. "You can't be a man, WTF is this?" or something on those lines. So from this I went and looked up the Gender equality act, to see if they were allowed to do this.

And what do you know, they can't. It's illegal to discriminate by sex, which is what they are doing here.

The next one, Sexuality rep, discrimination against sexuality. You can't be hetro and have the role ? This falls under the same law again, it's illegal.

Race equality. Here's a mine field. So you are telling me that a white person can't do that role because of the colour of their skin? What is this? That's right, illegal.

The last one. Trans rep. Why can't someone who is passionate about trans issues, but isn't one fill that role? Oh and again, illegal.

I have had enough of this. I've emailed the university about this and will post the reply when I get it.
