At my uni, 70+% = 1st, 60-79 = 2.1, 50-59 = 2.2

I think the OP meant how many of the degrees awarded are awarded Firsts, Upper Seconds etc

(If so, it really does depend on the university and course.. but at a top 10 uni, you're looking at about >75% of the graduating class getting a 2.1 or above).

I think he meant, what percentage *of people* achieve firsts, 2:1s etc...

I have no idea tho, sorry!

EDIT: Oops, posted at the same time!

Oh yeah oops, misread the question

Varies wildly. On my course at my uni, its about 30% 1sts, which sounds loads, but there are also a fair amount of 2:2s and 3rds, although the majority get a 2:1.
I'm at Oxford, and we tend to give out a higher proportion of 1sts and 2:1s than some other unis. Also, I do chemistry, a degree in which there seem to be more firsts and thirds than other subjects. By contrast, in subjects like history, there are often not that many firsts, lots and lots of 2:1s and hardly anyone gets below that.

Here we go.

It's for 03/04, so may be a bit out of date.

the National Student Survery results give the breakdown of every course at all the unis that participated the number of 1sts 2.1's 2.2's etc

At St Andrews, in my year, about 10% got firsts, about 60% got 2:1's and the rest got drunk.

K thanks for the replies.

I'm at Bristol, and it looks like about 80% of people get 2:1s, that's ridiculoulsy high.

I really want a first, but I read somewhere that only 9% of people taking a social science get a first, eep :P

That doesn't mean there's any reason why you couldn't get one, though. Overall statistics won't influence your personal chances of getting the grade you're aiming for, which may well be higher than on average, depending on how good you are at your subject, how much work you're willing to put in, etc.

:ditto: If you really want a first, you're prepared to put the work in for it and you're very good at your subject, there's no reason you can't get one
