how come this mass spectrum is for dimethyl pentane, not heptane? watch

    Image attached. Can it be concluded this compound is dimethyl pentane and not heptane just from the information given? How so?

    Stick C7H16 into the molecular formula hole and look at the MS spectra.

    Note the abundances of the fragments. It is these abundances that tell us about the structure of the molecule they came from.

    OK. But I am not allowed to do that in the exam lol. How could I tell without the help of the internet.

    That website doesn't have answers, it only has spectra.

    You can see for yourself what the fragmentation patterns look like and can try for yourself to apply your knowledge of sizes and abundances of fragments.
