If our son (from England) is thinking of going to a Scottish university and applied for 'direct entry' into the second year of the undergraduate MSc Chemistry. He has applied for 4 year English MChem courses too and has already submitted his SFE application. However he has been told by the Scottish uni that if he just fell short of the offer made to him he could possibly be accepted in the first year of the course and would then have 5 years at the uni to complete his degree. Would he still be able to be funded for all the course, assuming that his personal circumstances (and ours) remain the same or similar throughout that time?

Yes that would be fine - he might need to send through a change of circumstances form before he starts to make sure his record has him going into yr 1 of a 5 year course. Extending before a course starts is simple.
