Coping with nerves!!

This is probably going to sound a bit pathetic but Im just wondering, how do people cope with nervousness??

Recently Ive been getting really stressed out, today I have to do a mock court presentation for my final year at uni and I feel really really nervous, I feel sick and have an upset stomach, Im shaking already and feel a bit light headed. Its ridiculous really, as I never used to get this like at all

Last week I went for a job interview and I felt awful: my ears were burning hot, my face and neck was all red, like a heat rash. I must have looked a right state!

No matter how hard I try, I just cant seem to stay calm and relaxed!! Which is unusual for me as I never used to have this problem

I have a few job interviews coming up soon too so Im really worried, as I seem to work myself up into a state before!

Any advice??

Hey, I just thought I would suggest getting some calming tablets, or what I use in a similar situation which is a rescue remedy. You can get them from Holland and Barretts, you just drop a couple of drops onto your tongue and it calms you down  its a natural remedy. I really recommend it, if it still doesnt work I would recommend that you go to your doctor they might be able to reffer you to some courses to help you cope

Okay I thought I would jump in at the deep end and offer some non-orthordox advice - beta-blockers.

Sounds right up your street :hugs:

I get a rubber band and tie it round my wrist or something then when I start feeling anxious/doubting myself I ping it once or twice. Does the trick wonderfully... just dont overdo it

Oh and breathe deeply and close your eyes.. obviously not IN the interview, they'll think you're weird!

Good luck with the interviews!

For presentations I usually practice a lot, and even visualise the room/people/my position :p: it works...
Also I've thought about a shot of alcohol but havent done that yet, last time a used heaps of red lollies that actually helped. Just knowing what you're gonna say does wonders.

I have the same problem, my whole neck and face go really red when i'm nervously anticipating something (such as my uni interviews; still got all my offers though!) I think i'll try the Rescue Remedy stuff before I jump into the deep end! Good luck with whatever you try.

I think I need to get myself some of those for my exams. Do you have to get them on perscription?

Herbal remedies have never done anything for me.

The saying "forewarned is forearmed" really does come into play here.

If you're going into a stressful situation like a job interview, do you best to find out as much as possible beforehand. Ask around - if it's a big company, chances are someone on TSR will have interviewed for them before. It's a retail job, go shopping there! Google the company. Find out how they're doing financially.

The more you know, the less you'll be stressed. A lot of the time, I think it's fear of the unknown that unnerves us.

Something else I do, is to try and trick myself into thinking "I don't really care". The less important I consider something, the less stressed I'll get about it, and as such, the more confident and relaxed I come across.

Lol, I have this trouble with, like MOST things. Going out, getting a bus, even going to school sometimes. I find just working through it works, like someone said 'visualising' the situation, telling yourself that it's only __ whatever it happens to be, how long it will be until you're out of the stressful situation, etc etc... and Kalms work quite well for me ) (herbal remedy)

at my uni these people were talking about a module they were doing called "life development and coaching" or something similar - they had to make a board game about faeries (sp) and theyre group work/contributions were being by someone who just sat in silence watching.
how anyone can get nervous about something as ridiculous as this ill never know - but they did because they wanted to 'pass' whatever that would entail.
To be honest they could have been doing primary school maths 2+2. 3+3, et cetera and these girls still would have been nervous, because all they wanted to do was 'pass' the module, (the fact their education is a sham and they are being ripped off is of no significance to this) so whatever you are doing you will probably always be nervous, its only weirdos like me that get fed up, dont feel nervous and end up dropping out.
nerves are natural, wish i felt nervous more often

But the OP is having trouble controlling the physical side of being nervous, not the mental.

well the mental bit causes the physical bit so its the same thing isnt it? If you can sort out the psychological stuff youre not gonna be nervous and you wont get any of the physical side effects.

OP, have you thought about hypnotherapy?

I dont tell anyone this cos its a bit weird but whenever im feeling nervous, unmotivated, angry, can't sleep etc etc i have all these hypnotherapy mp3 on my ipod that i listen to. They totally work, definitely the best short-term cure for stuff like that

(and try the rescue remedy. My mum swears by it and shes a emotional wreck most of the time)

Thanks for the replies guys

Ive had hypnotherapy in the past, it did work to some extent. The problem is that Ive also suffered with anxiety in the past and on ocassions it resurfaces, at the least convenient times, and obviously this just makes my nerves even worse

Im always really well prepared for everything but I just still cant get round the nerves. Think I might try the rescue remedy though and see if that helps

Thanks everyone
