    Why there is only a gradual decrease in atomic radius when moving across a series of transition elements? I tried to look up the answer but I couldn't get it.

    Filling up 3d level which is inside the 4s level. The increase in 3d electron density effectively shields the outer 4s from the increasing nuclear charge ...
