This is a really stupid question but it's one of the little things that has always confused me and I had trouble googling it because I don't really know how to explain it.

So on maths papers the square root symbol is written like this

But I've never been certain on if that means this
    Attachment 514589514595

    or this
    Attachment 514589514595514600

I know It's a stupid question but it's one of those things that really stresses me out sometimes because I just don't know. (Also don't know why they don't just draw the line on)

It's just the program used to create it (probably word)

Mathtype is wonderful because it's clear.

It would refer to the first thumbnail, for the 2nd they would use brackets.

In more recent papers (including the ones you will sit) they use proper typesetting, so \sqrt{x+2} instead of \sqrt{}(x+2). Hopefully you should meet this proper typesetting soon enough as you practice papers. :-)
