    Chromosomes come in homologous pairs, one from the father and one from the mother, and they contain the same genes.

    How do these chromosomes 'know' which of the other chromosomes to pair up with during meiosis?

    What would happen if two different chromosomes, that weren't pairs, matched up?

    I don't think the mechanism behind the pairing of homologous chromosomes is known at this point, on that pairing is known to occur during meiosis by some form of searching method.

    If chromosomes weren't correctly paired, it can be safe to assume that a nondisjunction event may occur, leading to an aneuploidy event
