Tips for picking a room in Peverell.

I'm a fresher living in Peverell, and after having a few grievances this year I thought I would offer some advice to people picking their rooms.

1. The difference between standard and standard plus is small and your £200 can be better spent. The differences are as follows:
- The standard plus bedrooms have a swivelling chair as opposed to one with legs.
- The standard plus bedrooms have a blue wall, as opposed to all magnolia type colour.
- The standard plus bedrooms light cover is a bit different, but not necessarily better.
- The standard plus bedrooms have thicker curtains, which I'm actually really grateful for.
- The kitchen units in standard flats have a slightly '80s feel to them. They just seem dated compared to the more modern kitchens in standard plus.
- Standard plus kitchen chairs are wood and chrome. They look much nicer than standard chairs, but have no cushioning, which standard chairs do.

2. Bottom floor rooms are the most vulnerable to burglary, but there is an alarm which attaches to the window. This alarm is triggered by vibrations, so there is a chance it may go off unnecessarily.

3. There are 2 blocks that have a fourth floor. I used to live in a fourth floor flat and it was way too many stairs.

4. People in rooms facing into the centre of the court have to put up with more noise than those facing outwards, especially on weekends.

5. Rooms that face the river have a great view, but as the weather heats up, you will probably want to leave your window open. The rooms are small and heat up so quickly. If you are in a room facing the river and you leave your window open and light on, by 10pm, there will be about a hundred tiny flies buzzing around your light. They will be gone by the morning, but it's still really annoying.

6. Flats in corner blocks always have one huge room. They're about 3 times the size of a regular room. In my flat it's room six, in others it might be room one. It's whichever room lies on the very corner of a building.

There are a few things that you can't avoid, no matter which room you pick:

1. The shower room is tiny. It's awful, really. The shower doesn't have a door, the sink is really small and the whole room is about 4 foot square.

2. The rooms themselves are quite small and everything is fixed into place.

3. The "broadband" internet is abysmally slow by today's expectations, unless you are up in the middle of the night when everyone has gone to bed.

4. There is every possibility that you will be living with a noisy git or a whining bitch.

5. Many things are not allowed in Peverell. BBQ's, organised parties, propping doors open, smoking etc. Fines will be issued and they will be large.

6. If you have a kitchen fire, using the fire extinguisher will get you a £60 fine, so just use water or let it burn.

7. Fire alarms happen regularly. So regularly that you will probably stop going out for them. If you get caught doing this you are risking a £100 fine.

8. There are 8 washing machines between 750 people.

I hope this helps someone. If you think of anything else, just add it to the thread.

hey, im moving to peverell in september, im in block c top floor! i have no idea which way my window is facing though, but the noise wouldn't bother me, the flies would!!

your post has really helped, ive been trying to find out what the accomodation is like for ages!! i dont understand why the shower has no door? can't you stick a curtain up?? and what does it mean by an 'organised party' ? so if it's your birthday you can;t arrange for people to come over and parteeey ?? xx

How much you reckon for an organised party
with the door jammed open,
everyone smoking
causing a large kitchen fire
which is put out via the fire extinguisher
minutes after the fire alarm goes off
but everyones too wasted to 'give a hoot'?

Ill get my calculator.

You're quite safe from flies in c block. The blocks that face the river are E to H on my court, not sure about the other court.

The shower room is quite difficult to explain. You won't be pleasantly surprised, but you will get used to it. The shower portion of the room is slightly lowered (by about an inch) to stop the whole room flooding, but water still splashes out and makes the entire floor wet. You can't put a curtain up. The floor's made of plastic so it's easy to clean up. The shower head is fixed into place, which is quite annoying. The sink is too small to properly fit a pint glass under the cold water tap. It's basically the kind of shower room you'd expect from a low budget caravan.

The organised party part probably won't ever effect you. Me and my friends were gonna have a pre exam bash with all of our friends, their friends, and their friends friends. It was gonna be on the grass in the middle of Peverell and we had sorted out some huge speakers (about 1000W I think) to play the music. We advertised it on Facebook and stuck fliers up all over campus offering free beer to everyone until we ran out. Two days before it was supposed to happen the residence manager called some of us down to her office and told us it couldn't happen because we hadn't asked permission. Smaller parties in flats happen all the time, just don't bother trying to organise anything big, you'll just end up disappointed.

lol craig.
Dont try and scare them.
It seriously not that bad, although alot of it is true.

- We proped open every door pretty much 24/7 - Yes we got caught quite a few times, but you've just gotta be clever really and look out for the "Green Men" (The upp security)

- We had loud music on most nights, didnt we craig! lol. Great parties in our flat, as we were soon given many nicknames by flat around us. Yes maybe we were a bit inconsiderate sometimes, but your there to have fun as well. Playing loud music is ok really up till 11pm. But dont worry, do it anyway, just be careful and listen out for people complaining or so on.

- Have flat parties after the clubs, or instead of. Flat parties are great. Peverell flats arnt huge, but you can fit loads of people in them, as long as you get along with your flatmates, which you probably will (which is another thing not to worry about)

- The internet is dire yes, it works but its basicly 1mb MAX but really like 512kb, 128k or 56k... so when your awake about 4am'ish you'll notice it gets a little better. But dont expect to be gaming or anything. xbox live is a basicly impossible, so is online gaming. Shame huh. But you are only paying about £40 for the whole year. So you get what you expect really.

- The en-suites arnt that bad really, not huge... means less to clean. Everyone complained that their showers flooded the floors of their bathrooms (pods) but mine NEVER did. aha. But the showers arnt that bad, you dont need a door or curtain for gods sake lol. Whos going to be there to see you? Yourself in the mirror?! The best thing todo is shut and lock your room door when you have a shower, and actually prop your bathroom door open as well, because it gets real hot real fast in there, and then you can hear your music alot better as well from your desk. Theres a good tip.
It fits two people in the shower nicely, with a bit of room to move around, if you enjoy showering with your partner, which is actually quite nice. The sinks in there though have to be the smallest i've ever seen in my life lol. Oh, and i didnt have a working toilet for a month or two, which was real real annoying, so report any flushing issues asap, although i did live for the whole 9months with a dodgey flush, but learn to live with little things like that, its really not that bad.

- Washing machines. £5 a time really. £2 per washing machine £1 for a dryer, but try and do it when you think no-one is around or expect a queue

- I had a front facing room and my window was even worse than most peoples as well, the vent at the top was broke or something and let in so much noise. Some nights kept me awake for hours when people were coming back from clubs n so on... but then again, some nights that was me making the noise... so you just have to put up with it.

- Fines yes. We got severell, loud music, fires, doors, smoking... Stupid really, just be careful and clever and avoid them

What are the rules on having people stay over? Say, if you want your mrs over for the night.

How does £2 for the washing machine and £1 for the dryer add up to £5? Are the dryers that abysmal at Pevvers?

hm. thats what i thought, but maybe he meant £2 for colours £2 for whites and then £1 for drying them??
You can't dry colours with whites, I'm sure. The heat would still make them run.

If you have people stay over I think your suppose to ask 'permission' but I never did, and with the washing try to do whites one week and colours the next or something and take a fair few towels so you dont have to wash your towel all the time, otherwise it be £2 per machine and £1 per dry and it all adds up

i don't think im going to have a full load of whites and full load of colours to do washing every week!? or every two weeks!? but then i'll run out of clothes! i dont get how it works.

also.. as you've stayed at peverell, could u tell me if we need to take our own tv ariel or do they have a cable coming out of the wall for the ariel?!? x
Reply 15
lol. Yes £2 per white wash, £2 per colour wash £1 for dry, which you CAN put both together.
I did a wash about every 2 weeks

As for having people stay over, my missis never asked once, its really not a problem.

They supply you with an cat5 (internet cable) but i think i took my own tv ariel cable, which plugs into the wall there

ooo okay, well ill take my arial up, and if they don't give us the cable, within the first couple of days i'll go out and buy one! xx
