Sea floor spreading is the process of new oceanic crust being created at mid-ocean ridges. The two key processes are basaltic magma rising beneath the ridge to create new crust, and the movement of the sea floor away from the ridge on both sides.

Continental drift refers to the large-scale movement of the continents over geological time.
