Why does an alarm clock 'go off' when really it is turning on? Discuss.

Because it isn't actually set to create a sound at any particular time, the alarm function is actually just a decorative feature.

The clock gets pretty annoyed at you going to bed too late and waking up the person next door so it "goes off" on one, each morning yelling at the top of it's monotonous voice and tormenting you in the early hours of the morning, in it's insane and depraved attempts at sleep deprivation-inducing revenge which it one day wishes to bring upon you, rubbing it's clockwork little hands together every time it happens to be 12:00 or 6:30. Viva la clock!
