Photography and graphic design

Hi, all!

I've got an offer to study graphic design and photography at Kingston. I've visited the campus, seen the workshops and met with one of the tutors on two occasions. I also met a student, who told me lots of great things about the course, but certain things she said definitely put me off going there.

Could anyone who currently or has attended the faculty of art, design and architecture tell me a little bit more about the social aspects at uni, student union and (if applicable) the courses itself?

Thanks!!

Hi vonbroten,

Great to hear you have an offer to study with us!

Is there anything in particular about the social aspects you would like to know? I've been a student here for 3 years now and have experience with the social scene and Student Union.

Please let me know if I can help,

Chloe

Hi Chloe!

I'd like to hear everything you know about the student union and social life! Everything from prices in the student bar to how difficult it is to get to know students in other courses.
Also, what degree did you choose? Were you at the FADA?

Hi Vonbroten,

Well there certainly is a lot, have you visited our student union website? If I miss anything it will be on there! So the Student Union have a strong presence in the uni. All 4 campuses have their own elected Student Union representative and Knights Park (the FADA campus) and Kingston Hill have their own bars. The Students Union hold a lot of events to get involved and are in charge of our Freshers Week for new students. They also have free advice whenever you need it and can assist with volunteering if students would like to get involved. They also run themed weeks throughout the year, we just had a week celebrating the different nationalities at KU and had a huge Global Festival to learn, eat and be entertained.

I've found it really easy to get to know people all across the university, it's not split up at all. The more you get involved in, the more people you meet. We have loads of clubs and societies for students too. I chose a degree in English Literature but I have friends from all of the four campuses, most people mix quite well and halls have mixed courses too.

There are other social aspects too, Kingston always has something going on and we're only 20 minutes away from central London, I spent most of my first year going to rock concerts. There are a lot of clubs, restaurants and bars to socialise in too. The main clubs are Pryzm, Hippodrome, Bacchus, Viper Rooms alongside pubs such as The Kings Tun and ONeills as well as our own student bars. The student bars are the cheapest, most drinks are around £2.50 or there are offers and deals, cheaper than the other bars.

Please let me know if I've missed anything or if you'd like to know more about any of the stuff I have mentioned!
