Fractured foot bone - NHS did nothing....

Right, I fell over the other night getting off the bus (I know, less booze...). my foot is screwed, swollen horribly, can barely stand on it, bone sticking out at a weird angle....

Went to A/E, waited for an hour. Got it prodded twice, asked if I could move my foot with my ankle (I can't...), then got told to go home and 'take some paracetamol' (for the dull thudding pain that can have me in near tears...).

Now various sources on the net have informed me that if you are having trouble walking it can be a serious problem and needs to be remedied immediately via splint whatever.

They didn't even give me a ****ing crutch, I had to hop out of the place to the bus stop. Am I right in feeling let down, and in fact have I been?

They probably assessed that none of the bones were fractured and that it was simply muscle damage, so sent you home to rest. However, you may want to see your GP, phone NHS Direct or go back to A&E if you think it is actually broken and get some more help/higher strength pain killers.

Don't know how they did that seeing as they didn't give me an X-ray, and the swelling is too much to tell anything via sight :p:.

Hmm...if the bone is sticking out at an odd angle, I'm surprised they didn't give you an x-ray. Maybe go back and push them for some more advice/help. If you plan on going back, don't take any tablets incase they give you some there. Otherwise, if there is swelling, ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory and you can take it at the same time as paracetamol which is for pain.
Hope you're feeling better soon.

I would assume that whatever poking they did ruled out a fracture, they do an assessment before sending you for an X-Ray. That said, I snapped my humerous (upper arm bone) in a motorbike accident and the Docs in A&E were adamant i hadn't actually broken it, even though the top half of my arm was moving in one direction while the other half was moving in a different one, so they aren't infallible i guess...

If you're that worried about it, go back to A&E.

I fell over on my ankle very badly last year. It looked like it was broken and the amount of swelling was horrific. I went to A&E, had an X-Ray and it turned out I'd just sprained it - very very well. I wasn't given crutches - it's very much frowned upon, as with a sprain you need to weight bear as much as possible.

You should go back to casualty and ask for an X-Ray.

I'm amazed they didn't least do an x-ray.

Similar thing happened to me - I got stilletoed at the Uni music ball, and my foot suddenly swelled up going a very funny shade of purple.

When I went to the doctor, they said there was nothing they could do apart from a very invasive op (as it was right on the top of my foot) so sent me home. Didn't even bandage it up...

a few years ago on holiday i stepped in a hole in the court while playing tennis and fell on my ankle and hand. couldn't walk on the ankle for AGES after that, and because I'd fallen totally on my hand the bone had jutted up and was sticking up on my hand, but didn't pierce the skin. absoltue fu**ing agony, i recieved no pain killers...but the bone did go back to normal after a couple of weeks. so I think if anything has moved it should go back once you give it time

Probably didn't need one and wasn't worth waiting for several hours in pain for an X-Ray which would have just confirmed their diagnosis.

Yeah, it's horrendous that they didn't X-Ray it. They should ALWAYS X-ray if they're not 100% sure.

it is so important to get an xray at situations like that... i dont know why the hell they didnt even bother to check your bone was fractured or isnt... health service quality is getting rather bad

They didn't make a diagnosis...I wasn't told anything about my injury lol. Could barely understand the blokes accent tbh.

Problem with feet I guess is that if the bone doesn't heal correctly you won't ever walk the same again.

And I've worked on my strut :p:.

Anyways thanks for all the replies . Gonna go into orthopeadics(sp?) and make an appointment tomorrow.

That's not unusual, i had knee surgery a couple of weeks ago and no one told me how it went or what they did, i have to wait another month before i find out. The point is, they'll have certain ways of working out what is or is not worthy of an X-Ray (not every ankle injury is, it'd be a waste of money), and whether you understood him or not they did at least do some assessment (otherwise they wouldn't have asked you any questions).

Surely you need a referral to orthopedics for a consultation?

Last time I was just given an appointment. Suppose that suffices as a 'referral'.

Put it this way, I'm not going into A&E again to be treated like ****e :p:. If they aren't going to do the basics I'm not going to trust them to make a needed referral either :p:.

He A) prodded my foot. B) Asked if I could move my ankle (I cannot). Then he muttered something and showed me the door. Then watched me whilst I struggled to stand up, let alone walk :p:. That isn't checking, that is pretending to check.

If that is usual, I'm shocked.

I fractured my rib and they did nothing. Now it's healed and i have a lump on my chest.

I dunno. Might be overreacting lol. Must have been into A&E 5/6 times with various breaks, never had this kind of thing before :p:.
