Should I drink coffee?

I am considering taking coffee for the exam period, because I am feeling stressed and hence sometimes easily tired. My mum suggested I try some coffee, and indeed, I felt much more awake and concentrated while studying. Also made me sleep so much better?! Because I did so much work during the day!

My only concerns are whether there are health risks associated with coffee, especially memory loss! However, it seems wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffee_and_health, is a bit biased towards the good side of coffee.

What do you think?

I'm sure it isn't the drink - it's the caffeine. I'd definitely prefer the home-made coffee - don't really like sugar-boosted soft drinks.

Get a sodding grip, you're freakily concerned by... coffee! It's fine, it won't kill you for goodness' sake.

How about amphetamines? They work a treat for making you more focussed and increasing productivity, errrr... let me think.. cocaine! That's a good one.

Maybe I'm just paranoid. I'm paranoid about everything really. I just want to make sure the coffee doesn't affect my exams cause I never took it before (not whether I die or not).

The coffee will do nothing at all to your exams, seriously...

You're wrong.

Eau, if you're not a regular coffee drinker, then I suggest you don't start for the exams. I'm a 'binge coffee drinker' and have been for quite a while, so it hasn't affected me personally. But caffeine intake before an exam or something when your body's not used to it can be bad. It's okay to have a cup or two at night if you're cramming in some late night revision. But drinking too much coffee (or coke, energy drinks etc) messes up your brain and you won't be able to focus. It increases your heart rate and stuff, and it will make you feel more nervous and shaky. I think the recommended amount is 4 cups a day.

Don't stress yourself out over it though, I'm sure you won't need 4 cups a day anyway

I don't think coffee in moderation is bad for your health. The BBC just published an article saying that 4 cups a day reduces your risk of gout! lol But I think 4 cups a day is a bit much..

i really suggest that you don't do the coffee thing. I tried that last exam period and it made me feel crap. Your body will feel better if you drink loads of water and fruit juice. Green tea is also supposed to be good for concentration.

Christ, I wish coffee still woke me up :p:.

It isn't going to harm your health in moderation. Just don't drink to much because your clarity of thought will go down the ****ter.

I want caffeine to work again :frown:.

Green tea has caffeine too.

If you feel it makes a difference to you being alert then great. I've been drinking coffee since I was 4 and my bod is used to it. But "taking" coffee, you drink it, you don't administer it intravenously :p:.

Health risks - who knows. Everything these days is associated with cancer, so you may as well drink it. But please drink something decent. This does not mean Starbucks/Nero/Costalots. Get a mocha and learn to drink it strong.
