Girls only please..

This is about period pains. I get them really bad. And I mean really bad. Sometimes I even have to harm myself in another way to take my mind off it. I've been to the doctors and everything, and he gave me tablets. They didn't work, so I went back and he told me to try a double dosage. They work, but I still get a few hours of unbearable pain. Taking a double dosage is also *******ing up my insides. Apparently there's a chance I could become infertile? So basically.. any recommendations of what I could do? I really don't want to be taking tablets anymore. Does anyone else get really bad pains? I would really appreciate some advice, seeing as my next period is due to come on one of my exams.. :frown:
Thanks.

The doc told me to think about the pill. But again, it would mess me up. Lots of people have told me not to.

It's not entirely stupid when you know how much it hurts :frown:

How do you mean the double dosage is messing up your insides? I find it hard to believe a GP would prescribe you medicine in a dosage which would cause infertility.

How do you know that it's going to mess you up if you don't try it? Everyone's different, and the majority of women are fine on the Pill.

I used to get awffffuuull pains, pretty much meant couldnt do anything for 2 days of every month

but hurting yourself to distract from the pain is ridiculous!

Have you tried using like a heat pillow thing (i use one of the ones you put in the microwave for 3 mins they are amazing) as i found these really soothed and its helpful to have soemthing like on your lower back anyway. Try this?

But in the end i went on the pill because of the pain and approaching exams. You can control when you dont want to be on, and when you are it is mucchh less painful. (Plus it was a great excuse to go on the pill for other reasons... )

However, in a way id advise you to be cautious going on the pill now with exams approaching. Most the girls i know who started on the pill, including me, found it really messed with emotions and stress levels when they started on it, and thats the last thing you need around exams!
So its a tricky one... whether you think its worth the risk. Maybe speak to your doctor? Depends how the timing would work with your exams (Im always looking at calenders etc trying to plan mine!)

Let me know if you want any more advice as its important stuff especially around exams,

Mefanemic acid. That's the one.

I'm supposed to take 3 a day, but I end up taking 6. That's got to be messing up my insides?

The infertility thing might just be a lie though.

I know pills can sometimes do not so nice things to your stomach if you eat them without food, but I don't think they could make you infertile. I mean, think about it. Would they ever approve pills for public use if there was any chance they could do that?

Thanks Clare. Yeah I do end up staying indoors for 2/3 days, and I always sit with a cushion or a hot water bottle on my tummy.

And that;s another reason why I don't want to go on the pill. It would effect my moods and stress levels, especially around exam time. And it's also a hassle to take it at the right time.

There is nothing wrong with taking the pill, it won't 'mess you up'. I'd recommend giving it a try

What a load of rubbish. Going on the pill isn't going to "mess you up". There are about 3.5 million women in the UK who take oral contraceptive pills. It's a well documented way of reducing lightening periods and period pains and there is an absolute wealth of information out there about possible side effects.

It sounds like you need to do some research and really talk through the options with your doctor. To dismiss the pill because you imagine it might have bad side effects is daft. Get the information first and then decide what to do rather than discarding something that could really help. I used to have really heavy periods and horrendous pains and taking the pill has done wonders.

I know the pill won't mess me up, that's not what I meant. Especially now at the time of my exams I don't want to be taking a pill which can have some big effects on my body. And it's also quite a hassle to remember taking it at the right time.

I'll consider the pill again once my exams are over. But what can I do about it now? :s-smilie:

I was prescribed 6 mefenamic a day and im absolutely fine, so dont worry. I used to take it with anadin as well, which is ok apparently due to one being paracetamol and the other a muscle relaxant...something like that anyway. I was prescribed co-codamol to take with it coz thats obv stronger than anadin but that made me really ill.

After a while the my body became immune to the mefenamic acid so i'm on the pill. I have found that it's great. I don't have to take any painkillers and my periods are way lighter and shorter. Also, my mood swings are much less "dramatic" than they were before...

Oh, and don't worry about remembering to take it... if you're on microgynon, which is what i'm on you just take it once a day and it says if you forget you can take it up to 12hrs after you're supposed to:smile:

hope that helps!

Well for now I'd suggest keep taking the Mefanemic acid. Also, get some heat patch thingies for when you're out - a hot water bottle should suffice for home, it's cheaper! - and make sure that you keep a good diet. I'm sure some of the girls will come along and tell you what foods to eat/avoid to help with the pain (I think bananas are supposed to be good). Try doing some light exercise too, which will help to lessen the pain and take your mind off it a bit.

I dont think the OP was worried it would 'mess her up' physically, more that it would affect mood etc around a vital time when she needs to be at her mental best.

A LOT of girls i know have found that the pill made them emotional in the first month of taking it, i know i found i was crying over absolutely ridiculous things, and several of my friends the same.
Im a complete advocate for the pill its been great for me, Im just saying its a risk between:
a) not going on the pill, and having two really painful days in the middle of your exams or
b) going on the pill and maybe having a whole month of revision / moods disrupted.

So look at your exam timetable and try to work out how bad it would be if you didnt go on the pill right now. You could always start after exams are finished if youd prefer.

take a long hot shower???????? works for me!

The pill worked amazingly for me. And I was prescribed co-codamol by the doc and that helped quite well. I was always told that exercise works really well but it's the last thing I fancy. All I want is chocolate, crap telly and bed. I'd try the pill if I were you.

Omg those patches! They were amazing! Can't afford them anymore now I'm a student but they ruled. So nice in the winter as well!

There is also an old fashioned method that is just as effective, if less mobile, called a Hot Water Bottle
