The police, with their limited budgets, should use common sense in determining the priorities of people to pursue. During a huge increase in sex attacks, should they focus on those carrying pepper spray illegally, or those committing the attacks?
They should apply the law as is.
You dont know the circumstances in which the pepper spray was discussed.
You dont know how much they focused on the attack, it could all have been entirely proportionate.

Police in Europe are clearly struggling to contain violent criminality, why waste resources on girls carrying self defense pepper spray?

Applying the law to the letter, mindlessly, inflexibly, without regards to circumstances, is absurd.

But they havent applied the law in that way have they. they have warned her about carrying a pepper spray which is illegal under their law. Its their job to uphold the law. Stop making things up and distorting what happened.

Not everyone can do martial arts - what if they have a back injury, injury, or are pregnant?

Will they remember all their special martial arts moves in the heat of the moment?

Also, with pepper spray, you can fire it and run away. With martial arts, you take a much greater risk, because you assume that you can disable your attacker, and that s/he isn't armed. If they pull out a knife, you are f*cked.
You do have some good arguments here. Thanks for responding.

"Not everyone can do MA" -- yes, that's why I said assuming she is physically capable.

"Will they remember?" -- That would depend on how long they have been training for and whether it has become an automatic reaction. You do learn vital areas to target to disable an attacker during lessons. Many people already go for these areas with no MA training whatsoever.

"Much greater risk" -- Potentially the victim might assume they can take down their attacker, yes, but not always, or not completely. But this would depend on the skill and attitude of the victim and whether or not the attacker has any fighting skills. If they do, or even if they don't, they could potentially disarm someone with pepperspray and take them down. Then, just like with a knife or a bat, it can be used against you -- so you've essentially handed them something to hit you with which is one of the last things you'll want. You've also assumed the victim will also think the attacker will be unarmed. They might assume they are, or it might not occur to them in the heat of the moment. If it doesn't, then yes, that could become a problem. But if the victim is trained enough, disarming someone with a knife can easily un-**** them, as you said.

Pepperspray can also be used offensively against someone who is innocent. I acknowledge so can MA, but again there is an aspect of discipline and self-control present that isn't with pepperspray. With SD you can strike and run away as well. It's not about fighting, it's about protection. On top of that, you don't run the risk of handing the attacker a weapon because there's nothing to hand them.

Edit: I'd also like to add that you can automatically reach for pepperspray in a situation that doesn't warrant it and escalate a situation further. There is potential for that as well.

I'm sure she was carrying a pepper spray for good reason. Imagine how awful it must be there if women are carrying illegal weapons specifically to fight off rapists.

I understand she had an illegal weapon but the authorities should just give her a slap on the wrist since she used it for self defense. It saved her life.

Lock her up - preferably in a prison full of sex starved migrants - and throw away the key! Won't have such inhumane treatment of migrants! :shakecane:
