Standard accommodation - Furness or Bowland?

Hey i have another accomodation question. I defo want 2 go standard w/ washbasin cos i'm pretty sure ensuite wouldn't be worth the extra £ for me. I think i'm definitely putting furness down 4 my 1st choice but i'm unsure about my 2nd.

I think bowland would be a good choice but I'm a bit turned off by the 26 to a kitchen thing. What are ppl's experiences of this? It's between bowland and grizedale for 2nd place anyway, so could ppl from any of the standard accom (esp bowland) lemme know what its like plz?

Chaars

P.S. I did post this on the q&a thread but didn't get many replies so I put it here. I did get told that most freshers don't have to share 26 to a kitchen and that grizedale has no standard, so i guess its between furness and bowland. What are ppls general opinions?

Well I've lived in Bowland for two years, both en-suite and standard and i love it.

Hmmm...im considering going standard too, how many people roughly have to share a toilet?

Only thing im scared about is coming home in the wee hours and finding people being sick in all the toilets :p: Is that a real danger?

Nope, never ever seen that happen. Also never had to wait for a shower or toilet either, and that's with about 15 guys sharing a bathroom of 3 showers and 4 toilets. To be honest, it's not a problem at all and you don't notice it.

And cos i only moved into standard accom for my second year with 9 other people who i'm really really good friends with, it was a bit weird but the whole concept of girls bathroom and boys bathroom just disappeared! Ignore the sign on the door, just head for the nearest one! It's not like I'll ever walk in in someone naked, cos everything's in its own little cubicle

Do many ppl stay on campus in the 2nd year? Seems like quite an attractive option compared 2 living in town. I thought there was little chance of being able to do this.

Yeah loads do, they got more than they expected this year. You have to choose early though, this year we'd signed up and paid a deposit by the end of November. A lot of people want to try living in town, and if you're going to do that then the 2nd year is the time to do it, bu i decided it's just much easier living on campus. I suppose the main positives of living in town are not having to worry how to get home after a night out, being nearer the shops, and not having porters or cleaners telling you what you can and can't do.

True, but I bet its a pain having to make your may to the campus every day (cos ur gonna need to be at uni most days) and staying on campus sounds much more convenient. Are 3rd years allowed too?

Also what are your opinions on Furness and Bowland bars, and which on campus bars do you spend the most time at?

Cheers buddy

Yeah, anyone's allowed a room on campus no matter what year you're in. (Obviously within reason, they need to make sure they have enough room for first years and you need to get your name down before the deadline.)

Personally i spend most time at Bowland bar cos it's about a minute's walk from my room and i can see if any of my friends are in there just by looking out of the kitchen window. Not been in Furness much, but i think i'm right in thinking they do quite a big selection of bers/ales in there. Bowland and Furness are probably the most 'pub-style' bars on campus.
County's bar's quite nice and not far from Bowland, i'm in there a lot too. It's more modern and generally a little bit busier than Bowland at night, which can either be a good thing or a bad thing.

there's always pendle too. their standard is only shared between 8 people.
i'm staying on campus next year as a second year. the trend seems to be that people go off-campus in their second year and come back for third year. i think i'm staying on campus for all three purely because it's one less hassle to worry about. but then everybody is different.

I stayed on campus for two years and I have a house for my third year. Everyone is different.
If you apply for standard in bowland or county you stand a good chance of being put in a kitchen with that many other people (26). I believe both of them have floors (bowland main is one) that are 10 to a kitchen. These tend to be older than the furness or pendle standard.

Pendle is shared between 6-8 people and is a nice quality (this was my first choice) It is slightly more out of the way than Furness, but nothing extreme! Furness has the perimeter buildings (i posted some pics in a thread a while back- http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=384560. I've been very happy there; people are extremely sociable and it's good quality for standard accomodation (plus a helluva lot cheaper than standard). I *assume* grizedale is getting standard accomodation- aren't they supposed to be terraced house style? But i don't think it'd be ready for september in which case i wouldn't advise putting grizedale down unless you really want it.

Hope that helps- little bit of a ramble!

Cheers for the responses guys. Yeh I don't really want to live in Pendle. Partly cos its slightly more out of the way than the other two and partly cos of the stigma attached to it (childish I know, don't judge).

I think Furness is gonna be my top choice then. Does anyone have any pics of the 26 ppl kitchens or could anyone who has to use one share their experiences please?

I imagine it would be pretty cool actually as long as you didn't mind having to be around loads of ppl when u eat. I spose impromptue kitchen parties might be on the cards as well? Would you form as close bonds with ppl if there were loads of you as opposed to 6 to a kitchen though? Hmmmmm....

there's a bigger mix of people for you to bond with incase maybe you got people you didn't gel with but then it's harder to blame mess on one of 26 people. are you at all interested in sport? because in carter shield terms, you'd wanna be in bowland over furness..

No I don't really care for sport, so that doesn't bother me. I read that Furness is the only college without a big screen showing sports in the bar. I know they have a TV room but don't they have any sort of screen in the bar?

I've just got a vision of it being really chaotic and crammed in the kitchen - I don't know if it bothers me though. Like you said, loads of ppl 2 mix with.

well if you eat at random times then you'll be fine but having a big kitchen will mean that you'll always have someone to eat with.

furness don't have a big screen. if you're not into your footie, it's the place to go, you wouldn't catch me there on cup final day anyway.
which colleges have a big screen?? caus im a big footie fan!

As far as I know, every one apart from Furness.

that's true.. though some get busy than others and fylde is the only college with prem plus!
thats no problem any more because sky are getting rid of prem plus!!
what would you say is the best bar on campus?

Of course it doesn't really matter if you live in Furness and want to watch the footy in Bowland or County bar, because you can go in any.
On the other hand i know people who live in Main of both of these colleges and really enjoy haivng loads of people around. I'm moving to County main next year until the other accommodation is built as well and i'm thinking it will be gd fun. The impromptu kitchen parties could be good and bad i guess, but believe me they can happen in a flat of 8 people anyway so it all just depends
on the people.
I do agree though that it could be more difficult to make close friendships if with 26 pple, and it may be quite daunting, but everyone will be in the same boat. Whichever you deicde you prefer the sound of bear in mind you have to pick an insurance anyway, as well as your first choice!
