Before the ucas application deadline I made the decision to take a gap year to gain some work experience. However I would like to know if there is any way that I could still apply to uni, even though it's past the deadline? Thanks for any help.

You can apply but many courses may already be full. You will need to check that the universities you intend applying are still accepting applications for the course you are applying for.

Yes you can apply through extra and then clearing later in the year.

Not sure xtra applies as they must have made 5 initial choices , been unsuccessful or declined. If he hasnt put his application in then I cant see how that would apply? thus imo its clearing only, although check with UCAS.

It's automatically into clearing after June 30th. Before then, it's a standard application as for before Jan 15th, but with the proviso that universities don't have to consider them. In practice, many will, but OP needs to contact the university directly and ask. If a course is in Extra, then they will be fine with a normal application at this stage.
