My mum is so condescending towards me she keeps on putting me down. I say I want to lose weight and she looks at me like I'm a piece of turd she stepped in. I say I'm going to start running and she laughs at me. Not a nice laugh but a real put down. These might sound like trivial things but its the way she does it and she's a miserable *****.

That's her stuff, her insecurities. Try not to let it affect you. Sadly parents are humans too and each have their own faults. Mine acts similarly.

We don't talk often and that's best for us. Too much contact and we're arguing. I, as everyone else should, actively try to surround myself with positive people and I cut or freeze people out that bring negativity. Would be great if it were different, but that's not the reality.

And those aren't trivial things. It impacts your feelings, so it is important.
