for unit 2 in biology, do we need to know about Gregor Mendel (his work on pea plants etc.)??

You don't exactly need to know the specific pea plant example but you should know the key principals of how and why.
The specification says:

It's painful just how inferior AQA is to the other exam boards. Their qualifications are mere objects of ridicule.
