How is that possible?

OK i've heard this a few times now:

Girl didnt know she was pregnant because she still had her period

 I mean how is this possible? Is a pregnancy like that extremly rare?

I know that you can have some blood during the first (3?) months of pregnancy....

I know this is very random...and I'm just curious....

Feel free to discuss/think aloud...whatever...

Yes, it is rare, but some people have periods during pregnancy

well during pregnancy if theres not enough hormones to prevent periods cause you to lose parts of uteral wall. sounds bad but most of the time its not. bleeding can also mean pregnancy complications and so should be checked.
it can also be a sign of cysts i think :s-smilie:

She's a character from Eastenders who was pregnant but didn't realise.

As for your original post, you might want to have a look at this which explains that whilst you can't have proper periods while you are pregnant, you can have bleeding or spotting and the symptoms of cramps etc similar to being on your period during pregnancy.

Can't sperm stay in a vagina for up to a week, which means that even if one has sex when on their period, the sperm might reach the egg a week later?
I believe sperm only live inside the vagina for 72 hours. And few women ovulate a week after their period.

"Implantation spotting" is quite common. How much blood was discharged and the colour is important to find out.

Quoted from coolnurse.com:
"Semen that remains in the body will carry sperm that can survive for approximately three to seven days."

Also, remember it's not just about how long the sperm can survive. An egg won't survive much longer than 24 hours in the fallopian tube.
