How long would it take for a community to change physical appearance after being isolated from their native land without interbreeding with locals?

Like ethiopian jews and there's some jews in north east india who claim to be lost tribes of israel and apparently have held to the jewish customs since the time of their exodus but physically look just like their local neighbours. So how legitimate is this claim?

Through evolution alone, likely tens of thousands of years at least. The examples you mention like Jewish communities are the result of integration and interbreeding with local populations, or in some cases (such as most Ethiopian Jews) are descendants of converts rather than the old pre-diaspora Levant Jews.

So such claims aren't very legitimate.

It's not possible for a people's appearance to change significantly within less than say 10,000 years. The first changes to occur would usually be in body mass or melanin. The exceptions to this would be a small community becoming completely isolated and being subject to an extreme example of the founder effect. That could pretty much only happen in an extremely remote place, such as an island or forest.

The exception to this of course is mixing with others of different appearance. It's entirely possible for a religious community in India to be descended from Middle Eastern Jews in theory, but if they look Indian then they would obviously be of largely Indian descent. A good example of something similar is the Roma gypsies in Europe. They are theoretically ethnic Indians who travelled to Europe hundreds of years ago, but one look at them shows you they are actually mixed Indian/white European.

PS - in a weird coincidence, I was researching a completely unrelated subject and found this study about Indian Jews: http://www.nature.com/articles/srep19166

It seems there are indeed Jewish communities in India with at least a small amount of Levantine Jewish ancestry, going back to the time of the late Roman Empire. This would be very surprising if it were in Europe, but then there are a lot of alien endogamous groups in India due to the caste system. There are some reasonably old African tribal communities in India who did not mix at all with the locals and still look identical to modern East Africans.

And then of course there are the Andaman islanders, who have been isolated from other humans for 55,000 years. I don't know about physical appearance, but the North Sentinelese Andaman islanders are reported as having a totally different language to the Jarawa, who live literally one island along from them. Which means that these two closely related tribes have not been on speaking terms for at least a thousand years (possibly several thousand).

Yeah it seems unlikely for any certain group to have majority foreign ancestry when they look exactly the same as the locals. And such claims are bogus.
