I was just on my way to the Chinese, when I noticed a lot of smoke coming from the bottom of Old Road. It was thick black, and as most bonfire smoke is white or grey, I thought I'd go look.

At the bottom of the road, by the lights, there was a car with flames pouring out of the hood. I, and another guy, ran over to the car and helped the driver out, to check if he was ok. He was, and the other guy pulled the handbrake on.

We walked back, and a crowd started to gather. The fire station was called.

And then, Boom! The whole thing exploded!

A guy across the road took some pictures, and I asked him to email them to me. So here they are!

Ouch!

I was in a crash not long ago - the first thing that goes through your mind as soon as you stop is GET OUT!! and those pictures show why. I can't think of many things more terrifying than being stuck in a car thinking it could go up like that any second.

The bad thing was how close it was to the main traffic. It only managed to stop there after the handbrake was put on, otherwise it would have rolled into the middle of the junction. When it exploded, the thing lifted about 5 feet off the ground, before landing again. It landed straighter than it was originally parked. A stupid bus decided it was best to risk the lives of the people on the bus, and drive down the right of it. The other guy who went back to look for more people was thrown on his ass, whilst standing about 10 feet away.

Heh. Just an average Saturday evening!

Seriously though, I think that the guy woulda been dead if we hadn't have made him get out... he was still sitting in the holding the footbrake until the other guy pulled the handbrake on. 10 seconds later, boom. 2 secs after that, pic1.

Did you find out what caused it? You didn't mention a crash or anything - car's don't often explode like that!

I don't know what caused it, and nor does the driver.

He said he slowed down, heard a pop, and a flame flickered from the windscreen side of the hood.

From there, it quickly spread, so the most likely event was a fuel leak in the engine.

And no, he didn't get out immediately. The fire started by the first post in the pictures, and the car drifted down to the end by the lights, taking about 30 seconds. He was in the car all the time, and the whole hood was engulfed by the time I got near the car

The left traffic lights look as though they were constructed by a simpleton - amber on top!

same thing happened outside my house about 2 years ago. There was a fuel leak in the car which trailed along the road behind it. It then sparked and the car exploded, killing the mother & kid inside.

Dare i say it was a bit of a stupid thing to walk up to a car that was on fire. For all you know the fuel tank or petrol line might have ignited when you were standing there and all three of you would have serious burns or be dead.

lovely.

If it puts anyone at ease, cars don't explode all that often, even in accidents.

Unless you make an enemy of the local mafioso. in which case, good luck.

Ya, you're right. But it was a fairly modern car, so the chance of any flashbacks down the fuel line were pretty remote (or so I thought). It was lucky that we did get back, because as soon as he was out, the fire spread very quickly toward the back of th car, which then went boom!

Anyway, I think i'd have rather been hurt than to watch some guy get killed infront of me.
