Groups 3,4 and 5 are expected to use their 3,4 and 5 outer electrons in bonding. This is true of elements at the top of the groups but as the group descends there is a tendency to only use p orbital electrons + s electrons remain as a lone pair.
Lower valencies become > stable as the group is descended.
