I can't relax

I am 18 years old and am currently on a gap year before going to uni. I work in a shoe shop which I don't really enjoy. However, even though I know I should be relaxed, I can't relax. I worry about every little thing and if there is nothing to worry about, then I always have a niggling feeling that there is something to worry about. It's wrecking my life. What can I do?

I kinda went through a stage like this. It was whilst and after a really stressful period. You say you don't think you should be stressed now, but maybe you've just gotten over something? I don't know, it could be lots of things.

What I did though, every time I had that "sicky-butterfly-stomach-nervousness-thingy".. feeling, generally not really about anything [or something rather minimal], I'd force myself to think it all through. Actually try to understand what it was I was worried about. The majority of the time I didn't find a source, therefore had to force myself to dismiss the whole thought and move onto to something else.

This, combined with just pushing the whole momentary thought out of my head and just trying to occupy myself with something else, took months of practice. Finally though, as silly as it sounds, you grow out of it.
It is down to you though. S'all in your head. [Well it was mine anyway!!]

Good Luck, I hope things improve.

i've ahd trouble relaxing recently.

try bachs "rescue remedy spray"

its a natural spray with extracts from 5 flowers in it and it really does work, all t needs is 2 sprays on your tongue.

does have a faint taste of brandy but thats because its in a grap alcohol, but its not enough alcohol in 2 srays to even show the effects. but maybe its something you should think about.

I know exactly what you mean, I've had an anxiety disorder thingy for a little while, and it makes my life hell sometimes. What I do is, I try to surround myself with laid-back people, or people that I feel really comfortable around, and that calms me down a lot. Also, talking to someone (I recommend just one or two people, or, if it gets really bad, a therapist is always good!) about all your worries, because it sort of splits them up, and you might be able to get to the root of what is really bothering you.

I hope this helps, and I hope you don't suffer too much with this problem - worry can totally take over your life, don't let it! xx

Thanks for your advice. I really do need it as the worry is now causing me to have mini headaches and backaches.

Honey, I know just how you feel! It's soo annoying I know, I felt exactly the same earlier in the year... all you can really do is just try not to think about, try and distract your mind as much as you can just thinking about anything else, whatever, except for the feeling that there is 'something to worry about'. It does get better, honestly! I thnik it's just anxiety and there's not much you can really do about it except just try not to think about it, and that really does help, you do forget about it! Hope that helps. Feel free to PM or post again if you wanna chat!

It sounds like you might have an anxiety disorder, so perhaps see your GP? They can tell you about possible options like psychotherapy etc.

My anxiety is pretty bad today so much so that I can't go to work. I am already on anti-depressants so don't want to take any more medication. I really can't stand living with this, it gets to me so much.
