im stuk on this 2... what is alpha beta?

Reply 2

alpha bias is where the differences between men and women are recognised

beta bias is where the differences between men and women go unrecognised, and this can lead to an andocentric view of human behaviour

In adolescence, Eriksons psychosocial theory shows beta bias because most of his research came from males, so he doesnt really take into account females.

Reply 4

as does Kohlberg's theory of moral development....so then Giligan did her own one, which was alpha biased as it exaggerated the differences between males and females

Alpha Bias = Are differences
Beta Bias = Bull****** there are no differences
Thats how I remember them,

I Thought Eriksons theory was Alpha because he suggested males achieve identity by their job whereas females achieve it by the type of man they marry.
Having no females and only males in the sample is Androcentric, not beta bias

The ones that I've learnt are:
Alpha:
Freuds Theory - Women have inferior morals due to underdeveloped superego

Socio-Biological Theory - Males look for youth and attractiveness in a partner whereas females look for wealth and status

Erikson - (as above)

Beta:
Stress Response - Selye suggested both men and women have a flight or fight response but later research suggests females "tend and befriend"

Hope tht helps

Good luck

Alpha- Freuds psychosexual stages of development. Freud said that females develop penis envy because they're unable to progress through the Oedipus conflict.
Androcentric- only used males when testing the dienz dillema and generalised the results to females even though they may have had a different view/morales.

This thread is nearly 16 years old, the OP no longer needs help for this.
