Citalopram

Just looking for information on the stuff really...

> Usual Doseages
> Taking 'procedures'
> Side affects

Blah blah etc etc

I know I could just wiki it or look it up but I am planning on doing that - I just also want some actual experiences or even second hand experiences from this board. Websites tend to give you extremes of doseages and list every side effect anyone has ever had. Wondering if anyone had any personal experiences with the stuff?

Thanks

First time I was on it I was on 20mg a day (standard starting dose) and it really helped with my depression a lot. In the way of side effects...I got night sweats throughout taking it, but that's pretty minor really. In the first couple of weeks I also got this really horrible feeling every so often that I can't describe, it was just like...Doom. So I went down to 10mg for a while then back up to 20mg, and all was good.

Made the mistake of coming off it too soon, had a bit of a relapse so went back on it six months later - this time it didn't help me at all. I was on 20mg throughout and the only side effect was the night sweats but I felt no better, so I've changed to Escitalopram (Cipralex) now...Which is much the same, but much more helpful for me

I've been on citalopram twice, both times for me it wasn't helpful at all. I started off on 20mg, went to 40mg, and was on 60mg for a bit. Even when I retried it recently on just 10mg I found that it lowered my physical symptoms of depression enough to allow the more 'mental' symptoms, thought processes etc to take over, so I had all of the bad head stuff, with none of the lethargy, and so became very self destructive.

My mum takes it, and for her it works ok though (I think). I guess it's personal.

I'm on 20mg, and have been taking if for 6 months. It seems to be wokring for me- it gave me the boost I needed to work out what the problem was and do something to try and sort it. I've not had any side effects I don't think. Maybe made me tired in the day but unable to sleep at night, but that passed quite quickly. Or it could have been cos I was pretty ill for about 2 months with chest infections and stuff. I want to come off it now once my exams have finished, but need to ask the doctor cos I think you have to come off it slowly, not just stop.

I started on 10mg and then moved up to 20mg. The first week I started, I felt dizzy and sick, and lost my appetite but when my body got used to it, it definately started helping lift my mood. If I forget to take it for a couple of days (I know I shouldn't, just stressed at work!!) I start to feel dizzy and sick again, so I assume when I come off it that'll happen again. My doctor suggested for when I do come off it, that I have a couple of weeks taking 10mg one day then 20 the next, to help my body get used to the lower dose because I don't react very well to a sudden drop in dosage. (I was put down to 10mg for a month, and started the dizzyness/sickness again)!

I started on 20mg and it made me feel sick constantly for a month. I can't remember how long I was on it for, but it didn't work for me so I switched to another one. That said, I know 3 people who it has helped a lot and who haven't had any negative side effects from it.

I started on 20mg for 2 weeks, it made me feel hungry more often, and it made me feel sick generally, and had a sleeping problems. (all of these could be the depression itself). I then increased to 40mg, it was hell... my anxiety increased, I was shaking much more, couldnt sleep, had panic attacks in the morning, increased suicidal thoughts etc... that was horrible. So I had to switch to Prozac with some sedative to calm me down and control myself.

only thing i remember was feeling horrendously sick when i had a decongestant with it!!

I hate this drug. Its insane and ive had a really bad experience. I managed to fight without the use of drugs on my occassion but ive heard some people find them really helpful. However in my opinion doctors should just stick to giving out lollies and stickers not antidepressants!!

I thought citalopram was prozac, as prozac is just the brand name for SSRI's - of which citalopram is one.

No, Citalopram and Prozac are two differnet types of SSRI's. I was told Citalopram is the most selective one. Coz Citalopram 40mg (the highest recommended dosage) didnt work on me, so my doc changed to Prozac, which she told me it's stronger the Cit.

No. Prozac is the brand name for fluoxetine, which is an SSRI. Citalopram is a different SSRI.

I've been on 20mg for about 6 months now (swapped from fluoxetine/Prozac which didn't suit me at all).

I haven't noticed any huge negative side effects, well none that couldn't already be put down as depression anyway. What I would suggest is to take them at a regular time every day, I'm still very lazy with this and it shows in my sleep patterns (if I take them before bed it keeps me up a little).

Citalopram works in a funny way for me - almost like a barrier for bad thoughts. When I'm not on it they swamp me, when I am, I can see the thought coming but my head goes 'I'll deal with it later'. So I still feel pretty down but not overwhelmed.

Some people say they've felt more anxious on it though, can't say I have, unless I miss a couple of days in which case am whoooaa.

Also can make it difficult to climax during sex for some people.

I've used this and it pretty much saved my life.

The only side-effects I had were making my dreams more insane than normal (apparently a common side-effect of anti-depressants) and some feelings of dizziness when I was first prescribed.

I started off at 25mg I believe, went down to 20mg, then down to 10mg. I'm off them completely now.

My GP recommended taking them in the morning with breakfast so it wouldn't upset my stomach and also it was easier to get into a routine at that time.

Which has reminded me that I get a lot more, and more vivid (and weird dreams) as well, ever since I started taking it!

erm, it didn't really do anything for me, so i've been moved onto Venalfaxine. didn't have any side effects though
