I think it's partly because a) so many people take the attitude that they don't need to do any work in their first year since the marks don't count and b) some people have got too used to having unlimited resits with the highest mark always counting at A-level.

I am 56 years old and just finished my first year at University with 5 firsts from 5 modules. I appreciate the marks don't count toward the final award, however employers are known to ask for the results of first year studies when students undergo placements.
