this is a dumb question but I have only ever played acoustic and bass guitars, I'm saving up for an electro-acoustic but I'm confused about how they work. I know they can be played with or without an amp, but if I was to play it in my uni dorm, I'd use headphones with the amp to not disturb anybody, but would the sound still come out through the soundhole of the guitar? even if it was plugged into an amp/headphones?

    cheers.

Oh yes, definitely. It won't be as loud as a regular acoustic or a classical guitar though.
Can't you borrow one for a day or try it at a music shop?
