Can someone please mark my 10 marker for A2 sociology and tell me if I'm doing this correct as we do not have a proper psychology qualified teacher....
Describe self-efficacy as a theory of health belief (10marker)
Self efficacy refers to a person faith in their ability to successfully negotiate health changes and health belief refers to the individuals reasoning behind these changes. Bandura and Adams aim was to assess the self efficacy of snake phobia participants undergoing systematic desensitisation which is where the participant is slowly exposed to their phobia in steps E.g: step 1 may be simply looking at a picture of a snake and step 10 could be finally touching a snake. It was a quasi experiment with 10 self selected participants who responded to an newspaper advertisement, 9 were female and 1 male. Bandura explained that self efficacy Was effected by 4 reasons. Mastery experience is were if they're successful their self efficacy (faith) increase and believe that can do it again. Modelling is were they witness another person be successful in a task so they believe they can too. Social persuasion is when they're encouraged/discouraged by friends, family and finally physiological changes such as getting butterflies before a speech make act as sign that you can't do it so will reduce in self efficacy . Bandura concluded that desensitisation enhanced self efficacy and as a result making positive health changes to their attitude towards their phobia this successful can increase their faith and can be repeated.
