Access Course hours - Is this normal?

Hi,

I was reading a prospectus for a local college about an access course

Anyway this is what the course guide says

This course has been designed to be flexible enouh to suit your needs, especially if you have personal, domestic or work responsibilities which need to be fitted around your studies. The course enrols twice in every academic year (In September and late January) and all classes are timetabled between the hours of 10.00am and 3.00pm, three days a week, with no classes during the school holidays.

It does say that the course is run over 1 or 2 years but I was just wondering, the issue of, '3 days a week', would that be considered as the 1 year course or 2 years? As i'm think that 3 days a week isn't that long for an access course as I was expecting to be there around 20 hours a week. If this was the case it would only work out as 12 hours a week.

Is it normal?

I know when I was looking into going on an Access course in my area, the hours for the day time course were 10 - 3 for 3 days a week, and this was the year course. There was also an option for 2 night a week, again 1 year, but this involved much more study time. It sounds about right to me, might be worth just checking it out though. From people I have spoken to, and my tutor on my Pre Access course, Access courses involved alot of self study, so while it might not seem much in college, there is a lot of work to do.

Well it's little weight off my mind considering that I thought i'd be there 5 days a week whislt juggling my job and homework so I can probably relax a little and still work aswell.

Hi - mine was classed as a full time access course over one year and it worked out at around 12 hours per week - but then I had to add extra on to do my GCSE maths and English. Maths tomorrow!!!!!

the work that you are expected to put in at home really does bump up the hours and although only 12 hours in college it amounts to more with homework etc

I have to add that i have found it a wonderful experience - and i would really recommend it. It can be hard work fitting everything in - meeting essay deadlines and preparing presentations etc. but the sense of achievement is well worth it.

Good luck
