Revising throughout the year, paying attention in class and taking good notes, banging out past papers when a 1-2 months before the exam and working out what you need to work on. Asking for help when you need it.

It honestly depends on what subjects you're doing. I do mainly essay based subjects and I find that having a strong essay structure that easily incorporates all of your AOs, its just a case of having the knowledge (hence EnglishMuon's suggestion of revising) to then go for it.
If anything, how other pupils across your exam will have a knock on effect on your grade. I'd averaged a B in English language all year but apparently everyone bombed out when it came to taking the exam which meant my grade went up. The 80% margin for an A is purely a baseline figure.

If you havent now, start revising your ass off, then get those past papers in AT LEAST A MONTH before you're exam. Since you doing AS, i would say that gives you 6 days :P
