    1-bromobutane can be made from a reaction of butanol

    equation: C4H9OH+KBR+H2SO4-->C4H9Br+KHSO4+H20

    Suggest a reactant other than a different acid that could be used to improve the atom economy of making 1-bromobutane by the same method.

    I thought using a a halide thats has Br and is lower down in group 1 would be correct but its a halide with Br thats higher up e.g. NaBr or LiBr

    Atom economy is calculated using the Mr of desired product and waste product.

    Elements higher up group 1 have a smaller Mr so numerically there is less waste and thus a higher atom economy
