Shaving

This is quite embarassing for me, which is why I go anon. I know nothing about shaving since my father or brother have never taught me how to do it, so I rely on my friends for advice. I'm 17 and I first started growing a moustache and messy beard when I was 16 and I used a disposable razor to shave them off every few months if it got really messy. Now I use a Gilette Turbo whatever razor every few weeks.

About a month ago my friends commented on the slight hairs on the rest of my face, such as my cheeks. I never paid attention to it until I looked closely in the mirror and saw I had little hairs on my cheekbones and such. So I shaved my entire face about a month ago, and then at school they were saying "never shave that high, only half-way down your face". I'm a bit confused. The hairs are growing back on my face and this time they are more obvious. To get rid of this they said thread them?!? What the hell am I to do?! Since when was shaving your face so confusing and "structured"?

First of all; everyone has hairs on their face [as in.. all over] are you on about the fair, small hairs?
If so, you shouldn't really shave them off..

Oh, so it is normal to have hairs on your face such as your cheekbones then? Why the hell did they tell me to shave them off! lol I was thinking won't I look like a waxwork but they kept calling it "bumfluff everywhere" so I shaved them. But then again, with no moustache or beard won't it look weird? No hair above the lip but on the rest of the face? *puzzled*

How dark is the hair on your cheekbones?

Its the same for men and women, if you shave an area of your body the hairs will grow back thicker and more obvious. I would not shave the ones you shaved not aware that you shouldnt have again coz you will be doing it for the rest of your life. I reckon you should grow a goatie

Why does it matter what everybody else thinks as such? I mean you see people wearing goatees and they just look plain daft. but they don't seem to think so.

I just shave off the big stuff (chin/sides/tache) and leave it at that. I occasionally remove hair from between my eye brows because I really don't want a mono brow but it's really not that big a deal.

That's the thing, it's not a big deal at all, nobody really notices the tiny things unless they're really paying attention. If they are paying that much attention you should be flattered . Sure your mates aren't gay?

The hairs aren't that obvious, you can only see them if you really look closely. I only noticed this morning when I was looking at my mp3, which was practically on my face.

And TheLameMonkey I thought what you do was normal! I will stick to that, because that's what I thought you were supposed to shave; chin, tache and sides. Thank you for the advice!

Are they the same as on your ears? Like.. really really light, that you can't really see unless you're very close?

I have hairs on my ears?? lol no they are thicker because I see no hairs on my ears at all. But they're all over my face.

I kind of understand you on this one. I'm 17 too, and up until a few months ago I'd never thought of shaving. I was waiting for that big "father-son" talk, and the whole cliche 'shaving with dad by the mirror' thing.

Not knowing how to shave properly, I stuck to dry shaving; so no shaving cream or whatever. It was alright, for a time, but it always left my skin pretty rough.

So, I wiki'd shaving, to see if it had any tips. There was nothing useful. But, lately, I've gotten into the habit of shaving while having a morning wash, or in the shower, since my face is already lathered up, so why not use the opportunity?

Anyway, what I'm getting at, is you don't need experience to shave. Everyone shaves in different ways. My dad uses shaving cream and his razor, and stands in front of the mirror every day or two, for a few minutes while he shaves.
I use soap and water, a disposable razor, and whenever I think the hair is getting too 'unsightly' I'll shave it off.
One of my best mates keeps an electric shaver by the side of his bed, so he can keep the hairs down completely. He stayed in my hotel room on a school trip, and he used it when he woke up, every day.

To each their own. All I'd say is, when you do shave, don't go "down, across, up, down..." or whatever. Keep the strokes all the same. Pretty much, what I do is, anywhere from half-way up my ears to my chin is a 'downstroke', and anything under my chin is an 'upstroke'. It seems neater to me, plus it's easier than being all over the place with my razor.

leave the hairs on the cheekbone, if you keepp shaving them, then it comes back but as proper hairy stubble, and thats looks weird.

How on earth did you manage to shave without shaving cream? Surprised you didn't cut yourself into ribbons.

Just go with the grain - generally below the chin is up, above is down, as you say.

Are you dark haired or tanned at all? My boyfriend has little hairs on his cheekbones because of his skin tone (he's latino) and it is soooo cute. Anyway, he leaves the finer ones that aren't visible from a distance but when a thicker one comes he plucks it out with tweezers. If you pluck often enough the hairs just stop appearing. Perhaps do that. My boyfriend's dad never taught him either and so he imitated what he saw in films where they cover their whole faces in shaving foam, so he shaved his cheeks as well as his chin. He doesn't anymore though! Just so you know you are not alone :p:

Sooner or later your facial hair is going to thicken anyway... so there's nothing wrong with shaving.

I'm sure there's nothing different about your hair, and your friends just seem to be messing with you... I have no idea what the hell threading them means...

Whilst dry shaving with no cream/foam now might be ok, it'll get a hell of a lot more irritating when the hairs get thicker, and near on impossible.
Also try not to go against the grain (so shave in a downwards motion)... otherwise irritation can occur.

My younger brother (slightly younger than you) just uses a cheap Phillips electric shaver, and it easily goes through small hairs, getting rid of them with minimal effort.

the hair on your cheeks, i get that too..realy piss me off! Buh dont shave that area..it wil grow back thicker,my cuzins n friends shave, and they got to do it all the time. I got my lil cousin to thread my cheeks the other day, do that its much beter, and it grows back thinner, and if you pay someone to do it, its about £4. You wil probably have to get it done twice a month, but it looks soo much beter! So consider threaeding. Sorry if anyone else has sugested this, ive only read the OP cant be asked to read the other posts..im tired lol

The hair on your cheeks is going to be pretty unnoticeable unless you are some closet wolfhound dude. Everybody gets it. Don't let it bother you. Threading will take time, and be slightly painful because you're pulling out hairs. If it bothers you that much, once in a while(every month or so) just go over your cheeks lightly with a razor say before you're going out. They take a long time to grow back, and shaving that regularly will be unlikely to give you stubble on your cheeks.

Its all up to personal preference. Ignore your mates, they're just taking the piss/bullying you. I bet they all have cheek hair. Just do what you're comfortable with.
