    Assuming the new moon to be the first phase of the moon, how are humans able to view the first few and last few phases in the night?

    In new moon, the moon is just a shadow. The first and last few phases mean the moon partially reflects some light. here:

    The picture is a rough approximation. The waxing crescent is seen in the west near the horizon. It's not at 12 o clock in the night sky.
