Well, in Christianity, animals were created first and then humans, and we therefore have a duty of care towards them and should treat them with respect. However, there also places in the bible which say that animals are more or less inferior to humans, and that humans have command over everything. It does really depend on what religion you want to talk about because each scripture is different. For instance, animals in Hinduism have a prevalent feature of being sacred. Cows are sacred/holy in Hinduism, and most Hindus are vegetarian. Also, some Hindu temples worship animals and some gods have animal characteristics, for example the god Ganesha.
