So I've been working at my secondary school since I left in year 11. My job title is a teaching assistant. It is a casual job.
I'm looking to get a temp. job this summer when I leave sixth form and I understand that my potential employer may or may not ask for a professional reference.
This is where my problem lies - I do not get many hours at all at my current job. Who do I contact if I'm asked for a reference? I don't see my colleagues often at all because of the serious lack of hours I'm given, and I don't have a line manager/boss who I'm close with. Do I just contact HR?

There must be a colleague who knows you. If not you can ask HR but they will give you the most basic reference cconfirming you were employed and the dates plus job title.
You normally give two references. Personal one and an employment one. They might not take either up. Check with referees they are ok with giving one if you name them, alternatively just put references supplied on request.
