This last year I've stopped doing exercise and I feel really depressed I haven't put on any weight. I was wondering does withdrawal from exercise lead to depression? When I did exercise I was happy, I only stopped because I realised I didn't need to do it to loose weight so what was the point

You can be unhappy if you stop something you enjoy doing, sure. Helps to ward off things related to poor physical and mental health to a fair degree as well.

I find whenever I've gone a long period of time without going to the gym (by long period in taking 1 to 2 weeks) I feel all negative and grumpy, not to mention unhealthy. Exercise releases endorphins and serotonin which make you happy, it also makes you sweat out all the bad toxins in your body. There are many benefits to exercise other than just losing weight.

simple answer: yes you can get depressed from lack of exercise.

depression is usually caused by imbalance of neurotransmitters such as serotonin (5HT), noradrenaline etc. serotonin decrease / increased serotonin metabolism can lead to depression and antidepressants usually antagonise natural pathways involve in serotonin reuptake / degredation. chances are you doing exercise increased your noradrenaline(in turn increasing 5ht) in your brain, thereby causing happiness. If you can, try doing exercise as frequently as possible.

if you cant to exercise, try eating more foods containing tryptophan (chemical precursor to 5ht) whilst having a balanced diet.
