    Hello,

I am a mature student pursuing Veterinary Science.

I am looking to study A Levels as an independent student and to sit the examinations as a private candidate. The courses I shall be studying are Biology, Chemistry and Physics. I shall need to achieve grade A in each topic in order to gain entrance on the Veterinary Medicine and Surgery degree. In addition to this, I shall need to undertake two GCSE's in Mathematics and English, in which I will need to achieve a grade A. I intend to study for the above qualifications in a year, although I may extend it to two if necessary. Quite the undertaking!

Are there any students here who have undertaken studying for their A Levels as an independent / private candidate? What subjects did you take? How long did it take you to complete your studies and pass your exams? What resources did you use to write your own course materials and structure (assuming you didn't study with a distance learning provider)? Did you hire a tutor? How did you go about finding tutors or schools to mark your practical units? Do you have any words of wisdom or resources to share?

I'd love to hear from those students who have undertaken any form of self education. It would be great to support each other.

    Thank you,
    M.

Hi there! Many people self-teach courses. I would advise, though, that you don't try and bite off too much to begin with, and start with the GCSE Maths and English before moving on to the A levels. We have a large number of articles on our site on GCSE Maths and English (as well as A Level Sciences), but I think this article on GCSE Maths is particularly good:

    http://www.thetutorpages.com/tutor-a...ths-exams/5608

Of course, it's entirely up to you, but if you do decide to employ a tutor the arrangement could be as flexible as you wanted. Some students decide to engage a tutor for a small number of lessons to help them with a particular topic, or even to help them work out a programme of self-study, whilst others find it works better to meet with the tutor on a long-term, semi-regular basis. Even just finding a study partner to meet with regularly is a great motivator (perhaps a website like http://www.meetup.com could be useful for finding others in your situation?).

    Good luck in your studies!
